WAVESCAN TOPICS

From the studios of Adventist World Radio, This is Wavescan.  Our programme for shortwave listeners and radio hobbyists from around the world.   I’m Victor Hulbert.

The Mosquito Network - 1ZM in New Zealand

(Radio New Zealand International has granted approval for the usage in "Wavescan" of their program on AFRS 1ZM in Auckland, New Zealand.)

* NARRATOR: In this edition of Wavescan today, we interrupt our regular flow of topics to present a very special program indeed.  At the end of our program last week, we announced that our opening feature for this week would be a presentation of "Hawaii Calls", the famous radio program from the Central Pacific back in the 1930s.  However, we will postpone the usage of this feature for a few weeks, and today we present instead, the inaugural program from the Mosquito Network in New Zealand.  That story in just a moment, but first our regular DX report.  Here’s Christopher Lewis.

Thanks Christopher.

The noted radio historian in New Zealand, David Ricquish (RICK-WISH) was performing a spate of research among the early recordings in the Christchurch archives of Radio New Zealand, when he made an important discovery.  He had re-discovered a 60 year old recording of the very first broadcast of the Mosquito Network from station 1ZM in Auckland.

Back in the year 1944, radio station 1ZM was granted on loan to AFRS, the American Forces Radio Network, for the entertainment of American forces stationed in New Zealand.  As far as is known, this is the only recording of an AFRS station in the Pacific from this era, and it forever settles three interesting questions.  During its American usage, this station was on the air under the New Zealand callsign 1ZM; the American usage began in April 1944; and yes, it was indeed a member of the unique "Mosquito Network".

With the approval of Radio New Zealand International, AWR is very pleased to present in Wavescan today, the story of radio station 1ZM and the Mosquito Network.
