How rich are you?

How rich are you?

I don ' t know if you had time to peruse the recent listings of the World ' s Richest people that have recently been published in various international magazines, but I did a bit of scanning ---and no my name wasn ' t on any of the list.

But what do we mean by the word rich? well one dictionary defines it as Possessing great material wealth, or simply  having an abundant supply.

So having defined what people generally regard rich to mean, I decided to have a look at those at the top of Forbes, rich list; a respected American business publication. Forbes, says American Bill Gates, of software company Microsoft, remains the richest man in the world.

Bill Gate ' s net worth is said to be in the region of 46 billion US dollars; people from the Germany , Saudi Arabia and more the US made up the top ten richest people on earth.

Now I added up the combined wealth of the people on Forbes top 10 richiest people in the world and came up with a sum in excess of 250 billion dollars.

How much money do you have in the bank?

The source of wealth for the top ten richest people for the most part is the retail business. Perhaps I may need to look into getting into that line of work.

But how many of these super rich people appear atop the list of those who give back part of their wealth to charity?
The name that I found atop this list, is a John Lancaster. the Sunday Times in the UK say that Mr. Lancaster has a value of around 160 million US dollars and gives back some 10 million dollars to religious and other cuases.

But that ' s from one source, the very rich of course, could be giving even more without telling the press.

we ' ve been looking at the super rich class, but what about the ' average rich ' if you can allow me to coin that term, well at the bottom of the Sunday Times 50 richest people in the world we find the name Rolf Gerling from Germany . He ' s into Insurance and only made a mere 3 billion dollars and change last year.

But while leafing through these magazine and websites, I came across a startling finding. I ' ll tell you more about that in just a moment.

I went to the website, globalrichlist.com which makes its calculations on figures from the World Bank Development Research Group. To explain that to calculate the most accurate position for each individual they assume that the world ' s total population is around 6 billion¹ and the average worldwide annual income is about $5,000 US dollars.

globalrichlist has this online calculator to determine based on your income, your position on the world scale of rich to poor.

Globalrichlist.com says more than half of the world ' s population don ' t make as much as 900 dollars each year.

Now back to my startling descovery, it appears from the their calcuations, I should appear somewhere on a rich list. They certainly had me down as being in the category defined as rich! can you believe that.

Well let me just tell you that if you make just 5 thousand US dollars a year, you ' re in the top 14 percent of the richest people in the world: meaning over 5 billion people poorer than you are.

Even if you only make the equivalent of 1000 US dollars a year --you ' re still, according to this website, considered among the top  45 percent of richest people in the world. essentially that means some 3 billion people are poorer than you are.

It appears when we take things into perspective, you and I have more to be thankful for than we thought possible.
take for instance, your being able to hear my voice, or to hear the song of that bird you didn ' t pay much attention to earlier today --do we stop to think of the number of people who wish they could but only hear what ' s going on in this beautiful world around us.

True, we might not have a private jet, or a hundred thousand dollar car or two, but does that me we ' re not rich?

We defined rich earlier to mean among other things, ' having an abundant supply ' ; if you have an abundant supply of love in your family, you ' re perhaps richer than most people with large reserves of cash.

People often assess each other ' s worth by their financial base, saying for example this person is worth so many millions, and that person has a net worth of so many billions.

But is this the way to measure worth or value?

How much do you value?

Well I went to my accounts book, to do a check up on my net worth.
And the answer came back, you and I are priceless.

My accounts book, the Holy word of God, says in 1Cortinthians 6:20 that we were bought with a price--but what price?
well in John 3:16 it tells that for God, the soverign Monarch of this universe, who created and owns all things, so loved you, and me --meaning that he so valued us --that he paid a great price for us,  by sending his only begotten son, so that if we believe in him, we will not perish but have everlasting life.

The same book says in Matthew chapter seven, that this Loving creator wants to share with you his riches.
He says ' Ask and it will be given to, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened unto.

So if we go back to the question, How rich are we? I ' d like to submit that money or no money, in Christ you and I are rich indeed.
